Paper can be torn, making it literally tearable. Spoken aloud, “tearable” closely resembles “terrible,” the judgment the speaker gives the proposed joke. Paper strength begins with cellulose fibers
Library of Congress preservation scientists explain that paper is made from cellulose chains derived from plant cell walls. Longer fibers generally make paper stronger and more flexible, while moisture and acids can shorten the chains and make sheets brittle. Western papermaking shifted from cotton and linen rags toward wood during the mid-1800s. Whether a sheet is easily “tearable” therefore depends partly on its raw fibers, manufacturing, storage, and age.
